Historic $2.3 million King William house

Built in 1893, the rambling two-story Victorian Haarmann/Goethe House home on 331 Adams St. has a brick and arched facade that is “filled with history as well as beauty,” wrote Debra Maltz, an agent with Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty, on the property’s listing.

Part of that history involves John Angerstein, the “baron of Adams Street,” according to a 1983 Texas Monthly article headlined “The Snootiest Neighborhood in San Antonio.”

Angerstein, who was in his 60s at the time, told Texas Monthly that he was the last of a line that descended from the grand duchess of Angerstein, an old village that’s now part of Berlin and Sir John Julius Angerstein, who founded modern Lloyd’s of London.

Angerstein, who lived most of his life in San Antonio, lived in the house starting in 1968. He shared it with “a number of cats named after opera characters” and a person named Sam, who he thought was his cousin. (Family records were lost decades prior).

Author Gary Cartwright described Angerstein as a “flaccid man with a red Prussian face and short reddish-blond hair. He speaks with gusto, in a stream-of-consciousness pattern that is difficult to follow. I try to ask questions, but before I can phrase them, the Baron has leaped decades and generations into the future or sometimes the past.”

Cartwright added: “After three hours of listening to the chronicles of the Angersteins, I beg my leave. The Baron follows me as far as his front steps, still recounting fragments of family history. At the curb I turn and look back. The Baron gives me a little wave of his hand. Cats dance around his feet, and in the bright light he looks very pale and vulnerable.”

The five-bedroom, two-bathroom home sits on almost a half-acre. There are two living areas, a grand dining room and an updated kitchen. There’s also a basement, a rarity for San Antonio, with a wine cellar and laundry room.

There’s also a 900-square-foot apartment above the carriage house.

Rick Casey, a former San Antonio Light columnist who hosted KLRN’s “Texas Week,” lived in the home from 1992 until 2003, Bexar County property records show.

Casey said he moved house on Adams Street shortly after selling his Guenther Street cottage to author Sandra Cisneros. With his wife, he raised his two daughters in the Adams Street home.

He said his family loved the home so much, they thought they would spend the rest of their lives there.

“The house just had a wonderful feel to it,” Casey said. “It was spacious with the large yard and the many porches.”

Multiple porches surround the home. There’s also a large pool, outdoor kitchen, raised limestone garden beds, a dog run and a large yard.

The home isn’t one of the oldest in the historic King William neighborhood. That title belongs to the Guenther House, which was built in 1859 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house at 331 Adams St. belonged to Christopher Price, the former president of the King William Neighborhood Association, according to Bexar County property records. Price, who served on several nonprofit boards including the March of Dimes, died last year. He was 64.

According to his obituary, Price worked for more than a decade at the General Land Office and then worked for Price Companies, a real estate investment firm. His capstone project was The Crossvine, a mixed-use housing community in Schertz.
