Here are the top three stories today in Manassas:
- The Girls’ wrestling coach had an emotional day as her team fought for the state title. Girls’ wrestling Riverside High coach Aubrey Burkett-Erice has worked hard for years to get to a place where she can stand at a state championship wrestling meet for girls in Virginia. “I had hoped that my daughters would have had this opportunity. But they were a part of the growth. Every single female that has come and fought the fight made this happen for the girls today,” she said. (The Freelance Star)
- Schools in Prince William County are considering enhanced security measures to keep students safe. Among the serious security upgrades are high-tech scanners designed to detect weapons for both middle and high school students. There are already plans to bring the scanners to all 34 middle and high schools in a phased rollout. Other upgrades present in the district’s rollout include better surveillance technology, uniformed security, and additional training. (NBC)
- The real estate market in our area is slowing down. According to a new report from the Prince William Association of Realtors, the real estate market is cooling off in the first quarter of 2023. While there was a decrease in sales, the number of active listings doubled. (Manassas Patch)

Learn more about where things stand after the final public commenting session on a variance for data centers in Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties, which would suspend short-term emission requirements through July 2023 and allow the use of generators. - Prince William County firefighters are calling for pay raises amid a staffing shortage — and failure to bring in more fire and rescue employees could ultimately become a public safety issue. The proposed county budget for the upcoming fiscal year includes a 6.8 percent market adjustment for the fire department, but whether it will be approved in full remains to be seen. ( DC News Now)
